A consultation is required before any treatment at Good Things Clinic, view our consultation options here.

Every patient begins with a thorough consultation to assess the lesion, confirm suitability for cryotherapy, measure the size, and ensure there are no features requiring onward referral. Patient safety and appropriate screening are central to this service.

Cryotherapy is suitable for a wide range of common benign skin lesions.

What Is Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy works by applying a controlled burst of extremely low temperature to the lesion. The rapid freezing and thawing cycle causes targeted cellular destruction within the treated area while preserving surrounding healthy skin.

Over the following days to weeks, the treated tissue naturally breaks down and sheds as new healthy skin forms beneath.

This treatment is quick, precise, and does not require cutting or sutures.

Lesions That Can Be Treated

Cryotherapy is suitable for a wide range of benign skin lesions, including:

  • Skin tags
  • Seborrhoeic keratoses
  • Age spots
  • Sun spots
  • Cherry angiomas
  • Verrucae
  • Common warts
  • Milia
  • Certain benign moles
  • Dermatofibromas
  • Pigmented lesions assessed as suitable
  • Sebaceous hyperplasia

Each lesion is assessed individually. If there is any clinical uncertainty or suspicion of malignancy, referral to a GP or dermatologist will be advised.

What to Expect

During treatment, you may feel a brief cold or stinging sensation as the lesion is frozen. This is temporary and settles quickly.

Following treatment, the area may appear red, slightly swollen, or form a small blister or scab. This is a normal part of the healing process. The lesion typically darkens and naturally separates over one to three weeks depending on size and location.

Full aftercare guidance will be provided to support optimal healing and minimise the risk of complications.

Safety and Clinical Governance

This service is delivered within a clinically led framework. Only lesions assessed as benign and appropriate for cryotherapy are treated. Where required, onward referral will always take priority over cosmetic removal. There is also a skin lesion check service available in clinic.

Frequently asked questions

Will the lesion be sent for histology?

Cryotherapy destroys the lesion through freezing and does not provide a tissue sample for histological testing. If histological analysis is required, alternative referral pathways will be discussed.

Will the lesion return?

In many cases the lesion resolves completely. Some lesions, particularly viral warts or certain keratoses, may require additional treatment sessions.

Will there be a scar?

Cryotherapy is designed to minimise scarring. Mild temporary changes in pigmentation may occur during healing, particularly in darker skin tones. Individual healing varies.

Is the treatment painful?

Most patients describe a brief cold or stinging sensation during freezing. Discomfort is short lived.

How long does healing take?

Healing time depends on lesion size and location. Small lesions may resolve within one to two weeks, while larger lesions may take longer.

When should I avoid treatment?

Treatment is not suitable for suspicious or potentially malignant lesions. If there is any concern, referral for further medical assessment will be arranged.
